OVERVIEW of CONGOLESE DANCE AND DRUM FESTIVAL 2013

COMMUNITY LETTER for CONGOLESE DANCE AND DRUM FESTIVAL 2013: BIAMVU BIA KONGO
("BRIDGES of the CONGO")

MBOTE ZENO!

The CONGOLESE DANCE AND DRUM FESTIVAL 2013, entitled BIAMVU BIA KONGO (Bridges of the Congo), will be held Friday, October 11th - Sunday, October 13th at the Malonga Casquelourd Center for the Arts, 1428 Alice Street, 3rd floor in downtown in Oakland, CA. As in the previous years, this will be an event that you can’t miss so, please spread the word to everyone you know and feel free to print, forward and/or distribute this information. There has been a presence of Congolese people, meaning people from the countries named Congo in Central Africa, here in the United States for more than 30 years.  These two countries in Central Africa are now called the Republic of the Congo, of which Brazzaville is its capitol, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, of which Kinshasa is its capitol, hence the dual set of Congolese flags that appear in the center of the flyer advertisement; as the people from both of these countries are the same people--Congolese people, split from what used to be ONE country.

The fact that this was the first Congolese Dance and Drum Festival to exist in this country when it originated in 2006, even though there was already a presence of the Congolese arts, is why this event is history in the making and what makes it so special.  I would like to emphasize the YOUTH dance class, which will be open to all ages, the Congolese LANGUAGE class, and the  FREE LECTURE and DISCUSSIONS(donations will be accepted).  So, come one, come all. This event is for all ages, dancers, non-dancers, drummers, non-drummers, spectators, etc.  Hope to see you there!  I will be sending other (shorter) email reminders weekly. The fees are $15 per dance workshop, (donations for the live musicians are graciously appreciated), $15 for the language workshop, $20 for the drum workshop, $8 for youth workshop (ages 4 -17, ages 3 and under FREE), and again all lectures/discussions are free, yet donations are graciously accepted.  The time frame of the schedule is Friday beginning around 6pm opening with a welcome/short lecture/discussion then a PERUVIAN DANCE workshop! Followed by a full Saturday of workshops including a HAITIAN DANCE workshop, then Sunday beginning with a COMMUNITY breakfast/potluck at 8:30am, ending with a workshop taught by ALL of the Congolese teaching artists together! The pre-registration deadline is October 4th, for those that wish to take four or more dance workshops and receive a discount, the cost will be $13each for those workshops and they are to be chosen prior to the start of the festival.

Lastly, the confirmed guest instructors and musicians are: BIZA Sompa, LaKiesha "BICHINI" Golden, MAKAYA "Kayos", Arnaud LOUBAYI, Laure Fleurentin (Haiti), Javier Gordillo Barrera (Peru), Colette Eloi (Lecturer), Armel "MAMPOUS" Mampouya, Jean-Armel MAMPOUYA, Arnold BALEKITA,Teber Milandou-Sita, Cassy Joseph (Haiti), Braulio Barrera (Peru), and Pedro Rosales (Peru).  You can view the BIAMVU BIA KONGO Schedule at WWW.YOUMUSTDANCE.BLOGSPOT.COM.
